This past weekend, I returned to my college for Homecoming, and it was everything I needed. I am a proud alumna of the illustrious Wiley College, now known as Wiley University—a small, historic Black college located in East Texas.

If you’re an HBCU alum or know anything about HBCUs, you know we are loud and proud of our schools. An HBCU Homecoming is more than just an event; it’s a culture. It’s returning to a place that shaped many of us into the successful individuals we are today—a stepping stone to adulthood. We gain an entire family during our time in undergrad, and coming "home" for one weekend each year fills us with joy. We laugh, hug, talk, and try to capture as many memories as we can in photos, yet we often get lost in moments of pure bliss and nostalgia.
I truly believe that an HBCU Homecoming is soul food—a nourishing experience that reminds us of our purpose and importance.

I came to Wiley College in the fall of 2012, fresh out of high school and trying to find my place. From the first time I stepped onto campus, I was welcomed by upperclassmen who helped guide me. In the spring of 2014, I pledged to my beloved sorority, the Beta Gamma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., alongside my nine line sisters. This year, we celebrated our 10th anniversary. In the spring of 2015, I was crowned Ms. National UNCF, and in 2016, I graduated from Wiley College. I spent four of the best years of my life there, forming lifelong friendships, connections, and a network for which I am forever grateful.

This Homecoming season was truly one for the books, and I can’t wait to return next year.
